Going to a special wine dinner tonight and could use some advice

I'm going to Enoteca Vin tonight where we can taste five different prestigious wines (3 oz. pours) or three wines (5 oz. pours) with a several-course dinner. I'm going for the five pours and will include one or two white wines. I've narrowed the choice down to 1997 Jean-Noel Gagnard Batard-Montrachet or 1997 Bouchard Chevalier-Montrachet. (I think the Condrieu Late Harvest disappeared from the list but I was considering that.) For reds, I will probably go for the 1998 Jadot Le Musigny (I've never had Musigny) and I'm thinking maybe 1997 Livera Chapelle-Charmbertin V.V. , 1997 Serafin Charmes-Chambertin and either the 1998 Vielle Julienne Chateauneuf-du-Pape V.V. or 1998 Artadi Rioja "Grandes Anadas." I know nothing about the Spanish wine or the CdP. Any help out there?

I like your choices. The CdP and the Artadi are certainly good solid wines but they won't teach you anything you probably don't already know and they're not going to show any significant development yet. Just keep your fingers crossed that your white burgs aren't corked.

One would hope that Vin would have backups and pull corked bottles. Premature oxidation is a bigger risk with the white Burgs (even good bottles of '97 seem fully mature to my tastes) , but again I'd hope they wouldn't serve iffy bottles. Personally, I like generally like Gagnard better than Bouchard, but some find Gagnard a bit too tropical.

Definitely the '98 Jadot Musigny would be my #1 choice for the reds. I prefer '98 to '97 in most cases, and Serafin strikes me as woody (never heard of Livera). Artadi is a fine maker, but very modern. Never had the Vieille Julienne, but '98 is a very acclaimed year for CdP. Look forward to report on what you tried!

That's actually what I meant to say. I haven't had enough Serafin to make a generalization, but I've had enough of the GC VV to be a fan.

My oaky remark re Serafin is just an impression, based on a small sample (maybe 5 bottles, ranging from the Bourgogne to 1er crus). I might be nfluenced by knowing they're Kacher imports (I like quite a few Bobby Kacher wines, but do find them often oaky). Maybe Jane will try and report.

Few comments about 1997 in various pre-ox threads, but I think that is because it was a fatter vintage that no one expected to be a long ager, so most were drunk early. Unlike the '96s (and now '99s) that people expected to drink at 15-25 years.
