WTN: Henschke dinner

by Jay Labrador » Thu Dec 13, 2007 12:13 pm

Short notes from last week's Henschke dinner at Prince Albert.

Henschke Julius Eden Valley Riesling 2005 - Tart, lemony, very high acidity. A little spicy. Didn't like it but it went reasonably well with an indifferent crab salad.

Henschke Euphonium 2003 - I didn't take note of the blend but if I remember right, Cab Sauv, Merlot and Shiraz. Lovely nose but slightly hot. Rich, quite dry with prominent acidity in the finish. Closed and a bit short on the finish.

Henschke Lenswood Abbot's Prayer Merlot 2003 - Caramel, sweet fruit but well balanced by acidity. Tannic with a long finish. Very good.

Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2003 - Lots of fruit on the nose. Rich and very tannic. Dried herbs. Very dry. Some cassis. Should be very good with maybe 5 more years.

Jamie is one of the most interesting wine writers around, particularly on scientific aspects. I scanned through your link to see whether he has written on yeasts but it seems not.
