2004 Dom. De L’Oratoire St. Martin, CDRV (Cairanne), Reserve des Seigneurs

Paired with some pot roast comfort food on a snowy/blustery evening in fly-over land. It was a good choice. Cherry/raspberry Grenache influenced, but this is not a fruit bomb. Solid acidity and structure. It held the 14% alcohol better than I would have expected. There still are some tannins to be resolved, so I would expect this to drink well for at least a few more years if this bottle is representative. The best part was the finish…gobs of black pepper and spice that lingered for what seemed minutes. $19

This is usually an excellent and supple CDVR Cairanne for quite early drinking. 2004 was no exception and mine have been gone for over a year. Be careful about the 2005, however. My bottles were badly reductive; an hour in a decanter was insufficient to remove the rotten egg aroma. Maybe this is a candidate for the copper coin treatment which I have yet to try.
