Wine Gifts

by Sam Platt » Wed Dec 26, 2007 11:19 am

We hit it big this Christmas, receiving a few potentially great wines as gifts. They are:

Molly Dooker "Velvet Glove"

1997 Dolce 375 ml

1995 Chateau d'Yquem 375 ml

Also received Warre's and Noval tawny ports. We should be drinking well in 2008.

Let's see...Laura received a bottle of Krug NV, I got a bottle of 2004 Lafite, and we also received 2006 Karthauserhof Auslese and 2006 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Auslese 'Schmitt'.

My condolences on the Mollydooker...

A Penfolds Grange 2000 here. Very generous gift, although perhaps not a stellar vintage in South Australia. Anyone have recent experience?

No experience, although very much a controversial vintage (Halliday liked it, others reckoned it's release debased the Grange label!). The upside is the volume of production was small, so scarcity is expected to drive the price up. Not sure if this is of any interest to you (I'm a drinker not a trader, so rarity doesn't do much for me).
Indeed a generous gift and that alone should assist enjoyment when/if you crack it open.

I got a bunch of wine gifts from friends, mostly in $20 range. But wine related gift I'm most happy with is some Burg stems from Schott Zweisel. I already had the Bdx, Chardonnay, and rose/Riesling stems, now I can put my Burg stems in dishwasher. If anyone is interested, Betsy got at Crate and Barrel, they are advertized as the Loire line, but they are SZ Forte line (has the SZ stamp). A bit cheaper than most places offer the SZ.

Three bottles of Oregon Pinot Gris, three of Oregon Pinot Noir, one Perrier-Jouet champagne, another wine journal and three of those tapered steel and cork stoppers that are very heavy and that I'll most likely never use.

I got an electric - re-chargeable corkscrew and a $50 gift certificate to a local wine store. The corkscrew is cool! 8)
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

I received some very nice wine gifts this year, with a 2000 bordeaux, and 2004 Chateauneuf de Pape, and a 'Holy Trinity' GSM from barossa. Perhaps the best gift was a 1 year e-mail subscription to tasting notes for the biweekly Vintages releases. This will help immensely with ordering wine in Ontario.

I received a Domaine De La Janasse 2004 Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

And a Nenin 2000 Fugue de Pomerol.

Haven't broken into either yet, but looking forward to it.

I have never tasted an MD wine. I know that most geeks seem to deplore the stuff, but it appears to often be on principle alone. I have seen very few negative tasting notes even from all of the haters on ebob. I wanted to see for my self so I put Molly Dooker on my Christmas list never expecting to get such a high end example. The Velvet Glove came from my very generous wife. I'm looking forward to trying it with an open mind.

Hit the big time this Christmas

gift certificate to a local wine store

as hostess gifts several cabs including a '94 and a wine book

crystal wine decater, duck shaped

My daughter gave me two bottles she bought in Rome, '05 Cusumano NOA and a second bottle is not available in the US, a new winery in Tuscany that is 68% cab/20% Alicante/12%Merlot but forgot the name.

Hit the mother load. A friend gave me a 1968 Highland Park single cask bottle of scotch. It isn't wine but if you drink this all the time you might give up wine.

Bill,

Have you tasted any of the Molly Dooker offerings?

Sam,
I've only tasted the lower end reds (Boxer/TLF) a couple of vintages back. I have not had the opportunity to taste any of their top end offerings such as the Glove/CoL/Blue Eyed.

My wife gave me one of those wine of the month subscriptions (is that what it's called?). She said it sounded good to her. I think she expects me to share.

Am curious about this one Tom. Is this Michael Vaughan's newsletter you are talking about? If so, I have been a subscriber for several years.
