I need Therapy...

by Mark S » Thu Jan 03, 2008 11:02 am

(Hope Robin doesn't get upset at this...)

Does anyone know what has happened to Wine Therapy, another site for geeks to go to? It's been blackened out, even though new posts seem to be finding their way there, but I can't get to it. Mr Perry? Anyone?

Site was hacked. Restarted, but I heard that old database was lost. You can get there at enemyvessel.com/forum, but now it seems to require registration. I used to sometimes lurk, but last times I did it was being spammed plus most of the rest of the posts were by our fave Russian ex porn czar. If you were registered before, I assume you can still get in.

Though if porn czar is gone, I guess maybe I should think of registering.

I'm maintaining my equilibrium. ;)

I don't have an answer for you though, Mark, although I see Dale has commented.

I would assume that Callahan (does he still run Therapy) has it hosted by a provider who does at least periodic database backups on tape or CD. Even if the live site was hacked, they should be able to easily restore it to at least the last backup point.

Why doesn't everyone come back here? This is where it started. We could all play nice, and it would be just like the good old days.
Best wishes

The database wasn't being backed up? Or did the hacker manage to get to the backups, too?

Not likely unless it involved a physical break-in to the building where the server is housed. Any hosting service is gong to keep backup tapes or CDs filed physically separate from the server, not accessible from the 'net.

For the record, none of those guys has been banned, and they're all welcome here. Using real names, of course.

Jamie, there is nothing I would like better than to see back, those who packed up and went away. But I am not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. Too many wounds I fear. Bear in mind that I am not pointing fingers, but it was an ill wind that blew no good for any of us.

Mark, I look in on Therapy from time to time but not regularly. I have been in there more this past week than in the past 6 months. At one time I really considering making that my wine forum choice, but thought it was a bit too juvenile for me. Too much or many 4 letter words for my liking and too many posters making newbies feel unwelcome. That has changed in the past few months for some reason. I suspect that Therapy will be back full force, but changed to a point that one will have to register and give a working email address to get in.

You'd certainly hope so. Sometimes, though, one thinks good backups are being taken, and you don't find out until you need a critical restore that the backups are in fact worthless and don't work. This even happens at multi-billion dollar corporations. The product that I and 300 others work on was almost lost in this way. We were fortunate that a shadow server was found that had an uncorrupted version of the software sources only a day or so old.

It's probably just taking a while to coordinate restoration with the hosting service.

I personally would set up my own periodic backup regimen, independent of whatever my hosting service was providing, if I could.

But the sad reality is that the same person is at the root of both incidents.

Heh, heh, heh...

Good one, Jamie. The resurrected Therapy contains a thread involving "Peter Finkelstein" and "Moët Nectar Imperial". In theory, it's like time hasn't passed.

Now, if we could only get Robin and Dressner to hug...

Oh, come ON, Bob! Being one of the abusers of newbies on WT, I must say that said abuse was merely a way of showing love. And you have to consider that WT is populated by a good number of very, very educated people from Arts and Humanities-related fields who have a very strong command of the languages they use to address the community. If four letters made sense in any of their particular linguistic economies as the right amount of letters for expression of a thought, I think I trust them enough to read any four-letter-word as le mot juste.

Oh, and I have yet to figure out how the smileys work on this thing, so give this message one with horns and large teeth.

Pretty remarkable statements considering you do still do post over there.

It would indeed be good to see everyone back in opne place/community, but calling it an ill wind isn't going to help.
