WTN: a Nebbiolo from Carema

by Keith M » Mon Jan 14, 2008 9:12 pm

2001 Orsolani Nebbiolo di Carema Le Tabbie (Carema DOC, northern Piedmont, northwestern Italy) 13% – appears dark see-thru cranberry red, smell candles, cool fruit, wonderful fragrant perfume, some glue, on day two smell tons more meat and tar, full and forward, taste tender cherry at first but lot more cool feeling, acidic, lots of fun to enjoy as it opens up over three hours (and indeed taste had changed significantly with move tender texture and meaty taste, almost bloody, on day two), this wine paired well with pasta with a tomato sauce even before it started to really open up, once it had opened up it was a welcome acidic yet fruity wine (much more fruity than I was expecting—but the tarter, leaner side of fruit) with interesting spice dimensions, I thought it was really solid wine, but enjoyed it best when savoring its flavors with food--but the transformation as it opened up was a pretty neat thing to follow

Keith
Sounds great. Sadly we see too few of these N. Piemonte wines in the UK. They certainly seem to lack the hype of Barolo / Barbaresco which can be a good thing!

Indeed, no hype here--the lack of hype aided my selection of it, as I chose it precisely because I was unfamiliar with Carema. But that's the good thing about choosing from a wine selection that I can trust--I feel more comfortable in seeking out something new.

Sounds good.

In the States, a popular producer from Carema you might be familiar with is Luigi Ferrando. Definitely available and definitely worth drinking.

Familiar with only by reputation, but it is good to hear another vote in their favor. I will keep my eyes open for them--thanks!
