WTN: LazyCreek HeinVnyd PinotBlanc '05...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jan 15, 2008 4:38 pm

Tried this Fri night back in KC:
1. LazyCreekVnyds HeinVnyd/AndersonVlly PinotBlanc (RS: 0.1%; 10-22 yr old FrenchBarrels, Surly, TA: 0.69; pH: 3.38; 237 cs; http://www.LazyCreekVineyards.com; 14.6%) 2005: Med.gold color; lovely exotic/floral/carnations/pineapply/ripe/piney/PineSol very spicy almost GWT-like very perfumed slight minerally nose; big/rich/lush very tart very minerally/steely some perfumed/floral/pineapply/mango flavor; med. tart/lean/acid some floral/pineapply/mango rather steely/minerally austere/tight finish; beautiful/powerful aromatics but hard/minerally on the palate; needs 10-20 yrs; very Alsatian in style; better than most Alsatian PBs. $25.00

1. On a thread on "Best Calif PinotBlancs", JimColey tossed out this wine as his nomination. Yea...BFD was my first reaction. So when I was back in KansasCity briefly this weekend and made my traditional trek over to Gomer's/MidTown and spied this one the shelf....how could I resist??? Well...that Coley guy knows something about wine...I'm here to tell you. This was one of the best Alsatian-style Calif wines I've yet had. Unlike many Alsatian PBs, which I find rather austere/stoney in the nose, this wine had incredible aromatics that were almost reminiscient of GWT. Loads of ripe/perfumed fruit. Yet on the palate, it had a racy acidity and understated ripeness that suggests that this wine will be a keeper. I suspect it will go out as long as 20 yrs. It can only get better I think. Don't know whether it is true PB or some leftover MelonDeBourgogne, but the steely/mineral character suggests it's the real McCoy. Easily the best Calif PB in an Alsatian style I've ever had. Oregon should be so lucky to make a wine like this. Z-H, too. Last vintage for this wine I've heard. Too bad.

Tom, have you ever visited Lazy Creek? I went there a couple of years ago because of the Gewürztraminer, primarily, and the Pinot Noir, secondarily. It's a bit off the beaten path but worth the effort. If my memory serves me, the winemaker's name is Josh and he does have his act together.
And now what?

The link in Tom's post blew up for me. When I tried http://www.lazycreekvineyards.com I got a "this page is under construction" page, with some contact info. Dang it!

Gary,
I've stopped at the LC tasting room every time I've gone to the AndersonVlly. But I've never done a formal "visit" there to talk w/
the winemaker or tour the place or barrel taste. There Syrah is pretty special stuff as well.

Tom, The impression I get is that you got as formal a tour as it gets. There's pretty much the barn with the wine stuff, the rest of the place, and the dog. The winemaker has pretty much always done the pouring unless he's expanded. It's one of those places about which my greedy heart says, "Don't share the info!!" A trip to Mendocino beats the heck out of a trip to Napa, but that's only me. G.
