WTN: A floral red!

by Tom N. » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:16 pm

What is the most floral red wine you have ever had?

Mine has to be this wine:

Deep purple, almost black with a slight fade to a dark pink purple edge. Great red fruit nose of strawberries and violets, with a few hours this nose evolves to deeper floral notes with earthy tart cherries. Red fruit with floral overtones, soft tannins, and a nice tart cherry acidity on the midpalate. A nicely balanced medium bodied wine . A medium finish of tart cherries and sweet-tart candy reminiscent of an fragrant iris I once had in my garden.

Food match: Pasta with meatballs and tomato sauce. Nice match with the tomato sauce but much better with the meatballs. Although this wine likes meat it seemed to love my thousand island dressed salad the best. Although this is a food friendly wine, it is probably a better sipper. Definitely new world style.

Petalos 2006 Bierzo, Spain, J. Palacios. 14% abv. (appropriate name for a floral wine!)

I don't know if it's the most floral, but when Madiran isn't overoaked I love the floral scents of it.

I was getting a bit worried about the Pétalos '05 and its modernity compared to the previous two vintages. I still sort of liked the '05 in small doses, so I guess I'll have to try the '06 also. I wish they would make an '04 again...

Aleatico is easily the most floral red wine I have ever tasted. I belonged to the Viansa Tuscan Club for a number of years, and received some of the Viansa Pacomio Aleatico every year. This wine is a lighter-bodied red, with sweet berry and floral aromas. Very different and quite lovely with lighter fare.

Hi Clark,

What type of floral aromas did it have? Rose petals, violets, apple blossoms, or some other type of flower? I know it is not always easy to pin down the exact fragrance, but having a floral reference point really helps me to imagine the floral character of the wine even if it isn't exactly correct.

Tom, The aromas are quite similar to those of a Muscat. In fact, the Oxford Companion to Wine states Aleatico ... "may well be a dark-berried mutation of the classic Muscat Blanc ... ." It has been a few years since I had this wine, and I cannot pin down the aroma to something as specific as apple blossoms, orange blossoms, etc. -- Clark
