Creamy Chardonnay's

by Melanie Brown » Wed Feb 20, 2008 11:05 am

Hi all

I am searching for a list of as many creamy chardonnay's I can find in the world.

From my research to date I have (the one's that I have been bothered to note):

Kendall-Jackson Vinters Reserve Chardonnay 2001 I tried the 2005 but not even close...
Chablis 2004, mont de Milieu, 1er Cru JP & Benoit Droin

I live in London but will be travelling quite a bit so am open to suggestions.

Hope you can help.

Kind regards

Melanie

Great to have another Brit over here on this forum. Welcome and plenty of help coming up. Living in London, you will have a fantastic choice compared to some of out here on this side of the pond!!
The only chards I drink are some wines from Chablis so cannot be of much help but here come the others!!

If you ever travel to the United States, you might want to try Rombauer or Frank Family. Very rich and buttery and creamy Chards. I'm more of a Chablis type myself.

The cost of most American wines in London will be quite high. I would think you might be better off looking around Oddbins, Majestic, Tesco and talk to wine staff. Australia produces some very nice chards, as well as NZ. Catena from Argentina also turn out some nice whites and a good price too.

When I read the thread title, the first thing that came to mind was Rombauer.

Maybe also Lewis, some vintages of Beringer Private Reserve?

Lots of deliciously creamy chardonnays from New Zealand, for sure.
If Robin doesn't mind, rather than try to list them all, I suggest you pop over to the Chardonnay reviews page on my website and look for the ones with 'creamy' in the description.

It's the process of malolactic fermentation (which converts the grapes green malic acid to a more approachable, softer milky lactic acid) that adds creaminess to many chardonnays. I find some of the Marlborough ones even get a kind of caramel creaminess.
One of my favourites, if you can find it, is Auntsfield Cob Cottage Marlborough Chardonnay 2006 and one I had again theother night was Bouldevines Dogpoint Road Marlborough Chardonnay 2006.

In some of the Hawkes Bay chardonnays, I find 'peaches and cream' flavours. Mmmmmm.

La Crema should be relatively easy to find and it's fairly creamy.
