Wine Shops in London

by Mike Pollard » Mon Feb 25, 2008 5:41 pm

My wife has convinced me to go on a cruise out of London. The problem is that she has already promised friends in London that we will be bringing wine, so I'm almost certain to have to stock up for the cruise. Can anyone recommend a few good wine shops in or around London? A place with a good range of Aussie and New Zealand would be ideal.

Mike
Plenty to choose from - I quite like Jeroboams who have a few stores littered around. Waitrose (supermarket) fine wine stores usually have a good selection, good on new world.

Jamie Goode's guide to London wine shops is creaking a little now, but is a useful starting point
http://www.wineanorak.com/london_wine_tour.htm

The vintage house on Old Compton St (a few minutes stroll from Piccadilly Circus) has a decent selection, though the store is a little warm for my liking.

Bibendum have a good range - not quite sure what their retail set up is though. New World Wines sound like a possible option. Philglas & Swiggot have a good range and might be the best option based on your suggested preference.

For general wine shop options try Jamie's slightly out of date (but still very useful) list here http://www.wineanorak.com/ukmerch.htm , or for more general searches

I hope this helps

Sorry for the cross-board posting, but this topic comes up often on the Squires board.

Mike, make sure the cruise line allows guests to bring alcohol aboard. Some don't.

Moreno Wines in Maida Vale for the best selection from Spain. Waitrose (grocery store) can be great too, also Berry Bros. Believe the Australian Wine Center might still be around?

Hi Cynthia,

Thanks for reminding me about this. I'll post on the Wine Related Travel section for some advice on this.

Mike don't miss a trip to BB&R - Berry Bros and Rudd which is operating as the oldest liquor store in the same location in London near St James Park. Its close to a place that makes hand made shoes, and a place that makes hats for the royals! BB&R was a delight because they have a place in the back where you can taste the various types of scotch/spirits that they have to sell. We could have stayed there all day.....

Thanks for this Sharon. The friends we have in London have a taste for Scotch. They probably know about BB&R but if not then we'll introduce them.

That reminds me - I really must update my guide to london wine shops

Fortnum and Mason, BBR, Waitrose (John Lewis Food Hall, newly opened), Lea & Sandeman and Handford (Old Brompton Road) are all worth seeing. Harrods and Harvey Nicks, too. The Winery. The Sampler. Philglass & Swiggot. Majestic in Vinopolis. There are loads...
Best wishes

Mike, if you are going to sampling the spirits in the back room, ask them to let you taste the one that starts out like white chocolate and finishes like a raspberry burst (I don't recall the name but I bet if you describe it they will know what you're talking about). It was like nothing I ever tasted. Also there is a Scotch liqueur called Glayva (which means Excellent in the Scottish language apparently) - this has a hint of allspice in it and they put it in oatmeal in the morning. But I loved the history of the whole place. And BB&R has their own label which is really good. Virgin Atlantic now serves BB&R wines in First Class. I'm so jealous! Wish I was the one going to London soon!!!!

I'll second Ian on Philglas & Swiggot - it probably has the best Australian and New Zealand selection in London. I believe the owners are from that part of the world. Oddbins is also strong for AUS and NL but they seem to be closing down at an alarming rate and replaced by uninspired :| Nicolas shops as Nicolas recently purchased the Oddbins chain.

You can also check out a map of London wine shops that I recently updated on my site: http://www.delongwine.com/londonwineshops.php

Have a great trip!

 sorry if my comment came across as critical  always worth updating though, as (has already been said), the question arises often and your listing is always the 1st thought that comes into my head.
