WTN: 2003 Marechal Pommard La Chaniere

A gift from Claude Marechal (see my “Trip to Cote d’Or” post), this was opened with ceremony, as a kind of heirloom from the trip. Beautiful burgundian nose with cherry, raspberry, some leather and a touch of cloves. In the mouth, tart cherry, some chocolate, violets, considerable alcohol, and decent acid/fruit balance. Sensation of more power than finesse because of the high alcohol (the bottle says 13%, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s actually much higher – during our visit, Claude Marechal told us that a wine with 14.9% alcohol was labeled as 13%). The nose was more complex and refined than the taste, but the latter came together after some brie and crackers coated the palate and tamed the excessive alcohol. Score: 89 (for the lovely nose).
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.
