Where should I eat in Orlando?

by Jon Peterson » Fri Mar 14, 2008 9:01 am

I find myself having to go to Orlando, FL. within the next few days. The last time I was there was with young children but this time it will be just my Liz and me. I would like to have at least a few dinners with very good food and an above average wine list. Any recommendations?

I've been to a chef's convention in Orlando and we had a hell of a time finding someplace to eat.

I think I remember reading a quote from the GM of the Orlando Magic a few years ago - he had moved there from New York.

"if it weren't for bowling alleys there would be no culture in Orlando."

I think he get in a little trouble.

Jon, Janet and I are fans of several places at Epcot. The French Pavilion has two restaurants, a fancy and a brasserie, with limited but excellent wine lists. Flying Fish on the Boardwalk has excellent fish with a very good wine list. We like the Norwegian smorgasbord, but the wine list is very limited. Artist Point has superb steak, including bison, and an outstanding list of Washington wines -- in Wilderness Lodge.

Pricey but superb -- Victoria and Albert's is a romantic service intense join. Great wine list.

DisneyWorld claims they sell 10% of all wine sold at restaurants in the US -- each restaurant has its own lists.

We never found anything to compare outside the parks, despite trying very hard. Bob

Jon, here's a top ten list. I'ld move Flying Fish up to number 2, and put Artist Point 4th or 5th.

We've tried three or four of the others, but wasn't impressed except that Manuel's on the Twenty-Eighth did a very nice job with a very good wine list. Friends say it's spotty depending ... not sure on what but it's thinly staffed.

I have to decide on Per Se or Jean Georges for our 39th anniversary, Chef. Janet loved Jean Georges and we both had a great time with wonderful companions at the French Laundry; I loved the view at Per Se at a great wine/food lunch.

Playing safe: Jean Georges, but ... which would you suggest?

A couple of off-Epcot possibilities:

1. The Cedars, in a shopping center on the southwest side - I can get an address if you like. Very decent, semi-upscale Lebanese fare and a small selection of Lebanese wines that's nonetheless larger than any other Lebanese list I've seen anywhere.

2. Little Vietnam, all along Colonial (US 50) just a little east of I-4. Lots of authentic Vietnamese spots. I've tried quite a few and haven't been disappointed. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll dig up more specifics on some that we've liked.
