I overpaid

by Jacques Levy » Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:09 pm

The 2005 Burgundy vintage has prices all over the spectrum. Darn it! I just (like a moron) paid $35 for a bottle of Meo Camuzet Bourgogne! Yes, it was good, but I could have done so much better. I think I'm going to skip this vintage altogether, no matter what the experts and the critics say. It's just too hard to know where the real value of anything is.

Well Jacques, you might as well skip 2006 and 2007 too. The prices compared to the 2005s are 10-20% higher with far more variation. Personally, I'd buy all the 2005 you can get your hands on from the producers you trust. It's not going to get any better next year. That said, I've found a lot to love about the higher priced '06 vintage -mostly white.

Trying to buy 2005 Burgundy now is not a good value proposition.

I bought a lot, but mostly village and less acclaimed (though not lower quality) 1er cru. I also bought the bulk of it early, and so prices were the original release prices, not the inflated "we've got you over a barrel Burgundy lover" prices.

Meo-Camuzet has always been a high price leader, so I would not let that color your perceptions.

Thanks David and Bill,

I'm backfilling on 1999 and 2002. True prices are higher for these vintages than on release, but still cheaper than the crazy 2005 wines.
