Last night we tasted a bunch of wines from the coop at canavese. this doc was new to me. the whites, from the Erbaluce di caluso doc were nicely aged from the 2005 vintage. i usually like younger wines; but these were good. apparently the erbaluce grape is a variety that does age. one of them was vinified by a sort of 'cold soaking'. layers of grapes are interspersed with layers of dry ice! when the dry ice has evaporated, then they crush and ferment. some skin tones for sure. both were biggish wines - lots of flavor. the reds were probably even better. there was a vino de tavola from unknown grapes that was very peppery, with lots of clean fruit and tasting great now. the more serious one from the canavese doc was a 2005 made from nebbiolo, barbera, freisa and neretto grapes. this could use some age. neither was at all oaky and had great cool climate acidity. this one had a rich cherry fruit - beautifully made for any wine; but especially a coop wine. at over $20 it isn't cheap but i just love it. they bill it as the next barolo. the 2005 rosato was a dissapointment of course. overall, really exciting to find something new like this.
