WTN: Terroir Wine Bar Tasting

by Brian K Miller » Fri Apr 04, 2008 12:26 pm

After attending a meeting in San Francisco, I walked from Market and California over to Terroir Wine Bar. 7th and Folsom is a long walk to carry a shoulder bag, books, notes, and a bottle of Chablis, but I am plump and need the exercise (and the car was an hour away in Concord anyway. No way in hell would I drive into downtown San Francisco on a weekday!)

Under the tutelage of Guillaume, I sampled multiple wines, including a very funky (somewhat alcoholic) Tavel rose, an outstanding 2000 Barolo and a couple of unique whites. No notes for these, too busy yapping and eating cheese and bread. The Barolo was very pricey but utterly beautiful.

What I did note, however, was the 2005 Saint Magdalener Pinot Nero from Sudtirol in Italy. Light strawberry color. Great mouthwatering acidity. More Pinot fruit than some of the younger Burgundies that I have sampled recently, but still light and appealing. Delicious wine.

I walked away with another bottle of Tissot Poulsard and a red Burgundy from Pommard AOC, but I would be tempted to pick up the Barolo and the Pinot Nero, too. Another day, another budget cycle.

Sounds like a nice place.
I thought St Magdalener was Schiava. Is this a Schiava/PN blend?
Thanks for notes.

Dale: My understanding from the label that it is varietally Pinot Nero. Not sure there is any other grapes in the blend. I will check next time I am there.
