WTN: Final Four Wines (Prum, Isole e Olena, Truchot)

by David M. Bueker » Sun Apr 06, 2008 11:25 am

1997 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/5/2008)
If there is one word to describe this wine then it is integrated. Every piece fits with every other piece. The fruit & acidity are in harmony. There is still limited secondary development, but the balance makes this very enjoyable right now.

1995 Isole e Olena Cepparello Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (4/5/2008)
Easy to drink but bland with nothing noteworthy. Undistinguished is an apt descriptor. Perhaps its best days are gone. Even a couple of pizzas from Pepe's couldn't do much for it. This wine got run over like Carolina in the first 15 minutes.

2005 Domaine Truchot-Martin Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis (4/5/2008)
Right now this is a more interesting wine than the Clos Sorbes I had a few days ago. Not as intensely grapey, with more structural elements, earthy complexity & a finish as long as the arms of the Memphis frontcourt.. This drinks quite well now, though there is lots of fruit and the balance is, as usual, impeccable.

Re: the Cepparello. Certainly matches my thoughts on the 93 vintage of this wine. Picked a few bottles up cheap at auction, which was a good job as it's decent, somewhat interesting but lacking the great complexity or subtle nuance I'd expect at the normal price. One or two bottles of it left, plus one of the 1988 - I'll enjoy them, but doubt I'll be rushing to restock.

Unlike our experience with a sole bottle of the Isole e Olena Syrah from 1994, which was stunning and for me is worthy of it's price. Not cheap, but very fine.

thanks for notes.
I'm trying not to open my '05 Burgs, as so many seem shut down, glad the Truchot showed well

I purchased an extra bottle each of the Truchot Morey VV and Clos Sorbes just to have a singleton to sacrifice in the name of science.

I will now go back to drinking the 2004s.
