WTN: Only The Shadow Knows

by David M. Bueker » Wed Apr 16, 2008 7:15 am

I celebrated the arrival of a box of ESJ Syrah and the new "Heart of Gold" white yesterday with a bottle from a prior shipment:

2002 Edmunds St. John Syrah 'The Shadow'
Maybe I should have waited - this stuff is still darned near impenetrable. It has developed a meaty streak though, so something is coming out. Beyond that it's still rpetty tight and restrained, but with tons of underlying material. I love the balance of the acidity. This won't win Parker points (duh!), but it has character and time is on its side.

The rest of my bottles are going back into the shadows for some more age.

Thanks for the update, David! I had one when it first came out and found it a bit harsh, like it needed time to smooth out. Sounds like it's on track along the aging curve (personally, I gave it an 'open in 4-5 years' mental note).

It's much more open and approachable on night two. But (as you might see from a post I made elsewhere on the internet) I didn't have that luxury on night one.

David, you are not really old enough to remember the show, are you? It’s such a small world. I remember vividly hearing at the end of one: “Next week we will hear from the maaaad men of Mat-a-waaan, - and how they per-pe-trate-their-das-tard-ly deeeds, ha ha ha ha.” And now I have a client from Matawan. Took me 55 years to learn where the hell they were talking about, and why they picked that town for the idea. :)

Covert - not in its original form, but let's just say that I've had the chance to hear it (among other things...Paladin anyone?).

Have gun--will travel? I've seen that show. And my sister and I used to listen to "Lone Ranger" on the radio before our parents bought a television. Also watched "Sky King," a Western with an aviation twist.

Was Marshall Thompson the star of sky King? I met him once at a hotel swimming pool. And I remember Gunsmoke on the radio. Do you agree that the radio episodes were more engaging? I know I used to enjoy championship fights a lot more on radio, for some reason.

Don't forget Light's Out along with The Shadow.

Hey, if anyone of you are interested in old radio shows, tune in to wrvo.fm, or, if you are in the Oswego, NY area anytime after 9pm weeknights they play radio shows from radio's Golden Age (Amos & Andy, The Shadow, Gunsmoke, CBS Radio Mystery Theater, etc...) Interesting stuff from a historical perspective, and sometimes you even hear an ad for "ROMA Wines"...

Sorry bout the plug, but I think they are the only or one of the only stations in the country doing this kind of thing for such a long time.

The community radio station up the hill from here (KVMR in Nevada City) broadcasts old radio shows on a regular basis (or at least they were doing this recently). Don't know the schedule, but they can be picked up on the 'net at http://www.kvmr.org if anyone's interested.
