Major Grünhaustaasting at Dee Vine (SF, CA)

by wnissen » Fri Apr 25, 2008 12:36 pm

Hi everyone, sorry I've dropped off the face of the earth lately, but a baby will do that.

I wanted to let folks know about the impressive Maximin Grünhaus tasting that Dee Vine Wines is putting on Saturday, 10 May. The tastings are always interesting, but this one will have a fourteen different Maximin Grünhauswines ranging from 1999 to 2006, and winemaker Carl von Schubert will be there. As always, I have no relationship to DVW except as a satisfied customer. The tasting is $45 and they request you email otto@dvw.com if you're attending.

I was much happier when I thought this would be the usual $15.

I've never been able to figure out how they make money on the tastings. With the hired staff, glassware, cheese, and then you haven't even included the wines. I know their margin is high (picked up some 2005 Hans Lang Hattenheim Hassel Spaetlese at Costco for $13 when DVW has it for $25), but still. It seems like they only charge the cost of one bottle of wine, which is about what you end up drinking. Or, rather, tasting and then spitting, if you wish to be able to remember what you just tasted. The Grünhaus tasting is a little more, but also includes a BA, which is something I'd never try on my own, so it's more than worth it to me. See you there if you decide to come!

I'm not sure they make money on the entire operation either.

But, this list of these wines is not necessarily more expensive than the usual tastings, where they usually have several BAs..

Unless they have to pay for von Schubert's airfare.. :D
