WTN: Selbach Oster 06 Kabinett and Zuccardi Q 04 Malbec

by Oswaldo Costa » Sun May 04, 2008 8:08 am

Accompanying a dinner of Asian/Brazilian fusion food at the São Paulo Buddha Bar:

2006 Selbach Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett
Peach and lime aromatics, nice, zippy acidity with a touch of honey (though quite dry), excellent acid/fruit balance. Not dense or complex, but delivers in a very satisfying way what it is meant to deliver. Score: 88.

2004 Zuccardi Q Malbec
Deep purple, cocoa and plum nose, but too much acidity and alcohol, and not enough fruit in the mouth. A one or, at most, two-dimensional disappointment. Score: 84.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.

Thanks for the notes. I like S-O. I don't think I've ever seen the Zeltinger Himmelreich, my experiences are mostly from the Sonnenuhr and Schlossberg vineyards. Maybe David B can tell us about the terroirs.

The Himmelreich is between Zeltingen and Rachtig on the same (northern) bank as the Sonnenuhr. I've tasted S-O kabinett halbtrocken from this vineyard. It is a rare example of dry(ish) Mosel Riesling that works.

Speaking from inexperience here, does a significant selection of "dry(ish) Mosel Riesling" make it to the States?

Gott sei Dank nicht. Ich bevorzuge meinen Mosel mit ein wenig Zucker. Aber der Rheingau ist anders...

:?:

I can see two Himmelrichs - the one near Graach, and another near Zeltingen, which looks to be on the other side of the river, near Urzig? is my map wrong?

Both Himmelreichs are on the same side of the river. The Zeltinger Himmelreich has a bit more of a west facing slope while the Graacher Himmelreich is more southwest. The Zeltinger Himmelreich is closer to Rachtig and Zeltignen than Urzig.

There you go - map has an arrow pointing to the wrong place.
