WTN: Wines with Japanese lunch

by Jay Labrador » Thu May 08, 2008 12:03 pm

Short notes from lunch at Nanohana.

Brundlmayer Zobinger Heiligenstein Riesling 2003 - Light green/gold. Not much on the nose. Very crisp. Long, melony finish. Light. Very good and perfect now.

Montes Cherub Rose of Syrah 2006 - Darkish rose. Dry, light, nice and easy.

Mount Edward Pinot Noir 2003 - From NZ Central Otago. Spongy cork. Not much on the nose. Very dry. French in style. Light, dried cherries. Very easy to drinkl. Particularly good with salmon sushi.

Le Petit Cheval 2000 - Second wine of Cheval Blanc. Classic, pencil shavings on the nose. Very dark. Excellent balance. Drinking well now. A very good example of Bordeaux. Excellent.

De Bortoli Noble One 2002 - Botrytis Semillon. Dark gold. Sweet but has some good acidity for balance. Apricot and burnt sugar. An excellent Sauternes substitute.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Intriguing notes, Jay, thanks! Just curiously, did the Petite Cheval go particularly well with any specific Japanese dish or dishes?

thanks. I was planning on holding the '00 Petit Cheval a bit longer, think it's ok for another few years?

Robin,

The one who brought it showed up late so I wasn't able to try it with any of my food (sushi) so I just had it by itself. I suppose it would make a good match for most teppanyaki. My friend who brought it ordered a sukiyaki and seemed quite happy to have it with that although that's probably a bit of a stretch for me.

Holding it a few years shouldn't be a problem and might even improve it a bit more although it is very fine right now.
