2007 Van Volxem, Saar Riesling, Mosel, Germany
“The estate is located in the commune of Wiltingen in the Mosel wine-growing region in Germany. It is one of the oldest estates on the Saar river, and has had a checkered history. This estate was previously owned by an abbey, and was run by the Van Volxem family for four generations. It was taken over by Peter Jordan in 1993, he ran it under the name of Jordan&Jordan. It was purchased in 1999 by Roman Niewodniczanski ( a scion of the Bitburger brewer dynasty) and revived under its old name. The first vintage bottled under the new name was that of 2000. Today, the estate owns a total of 20 hectares of vineyards, these are mainly planted with Riesling. The vineyards include holdings in the following sites: Braunfels, Gottesfuß, Klosterberg, Kupp, Scharzhofberg and Altenberg. A special feature are the ungrafted 120-year-old Riesling vines on the Gottesfuß site. Since 2007 the estate is also member of the VDP” wein-plus.de
Beautiful colour, light-yellow with greenish reflections. This Estate Riesling or also called “Saar Riesling” offers a quite cautious bouquet of lilac and stonefruits. At the beginning the typical creamy Van Volxem mouthfeeling, but after the first sip you notice, which already started with the vintage 06, that the wines are more slim and filigree than in previous vintages. Not the previous opulent fruit is in the foreground anymore, but the winemaker want to extract more the minerality. Lovely filigree Riesling with flavors of stonefruits, tangerine peel, lilac, anise and in the finish a remarkable slate minerality. Convincing QPR for around 10 Euro. BTW, the wine needs a big glass.I am really curious about the rest of the collection, especially “Gottesfuß”. Here you will find great photos from the winery and the cliffy vineyards: Van Volxem
