A friend of my friends Joe and Donna was in from Minnesota, so we had a foursome for "Millenium" tonight. FRUSTRATING episode ("Covenant"

2005 Deux Monthelie Rully (Chardonnay) Quite ripe and fruit forward. Flavorful, but I preferred the lighter, more elegant structure of the Stag's Leap Saturday night. 88 points.
2001 Smith-Haut-Lafite. I love this wine.

This may be my third bottle, and I've enjoyed every one. When opened and decanted, a lovely nose of cedar and leather and dark cherry. Color is purple with ruby rim. Palate was mulitlayered and enjoyable, with a hit of cherry on the front of the palate which drops off. Good acidity-there is definitely an underlying green note here which is not offensive at all but adds freshness. The leather and tobacco on the nose show on the palate as well, with a very noticeable savoryness in the fruit. I guess what I love about this wine is how multifaceted it is. I've never tried the really fancy First Growths from the Medoc or Graves, but this wine's layers give me an idea about what people mean when they talk about complexity. 95 points???
