WTN: Ch. Roque Le Mayne '04 and Ch. La Croix Figeac '03

by Jay Labrador » Tue May 13, 2008 12:17 pm

Notes from a couple of samples tried at Lemuria with Arnie, Helen and Kitt.

Chateau Roque Le Mayne 2004 - Cotes de Castillon. Very dark. Good nose of sweet berries. A rather soft wine although it does have a firm finish. Very dry. Perhaps could do with a bit more fruit. An easy, uncomplicated wine in a drink now style. Not bad.

Chateau La Criox Figeac 2003 - St. Emilion Grand Cru. Smoky, coffe, toffee notes dominate the nose although there is a berry character underneath. Dry but has good fruit. Mint. Medium bodied. Generally soft with just a bit of tannin on the finish to give it some grip and structure to stand up to food. Good balance. Spicy finish. Good length. Very nice for current drinking and possibly short-term cellaring.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Hi Jay,

Many thanks for your notes.

I visited Chateau Roque Le Mayne a few years ago. It was the best estate I went to that day.
Castillon is a buzz word in Bordeaux for good value wines. The way Fronsac used to be...

Your positive experience shows what Bordeaux can do in the affordable price range.

Best regards,
Alex R.
