Bodega Del Fin Del Mundo Malbec Reserva 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Thu May 15, 2008 6:37 pm

Patagonia.

Very dark purple in the glass.

Vegetal and charred-burned notes on the nose.

Soft in the mouth, creamy, cocoa, some vegginess which went away with time, rich black cherry and blueberry, tangy acidity, peppery, light to medium bodied, a rather odd shoe-polish-like note, with some heat and alcohol shrillness toward the end.

The wine took quite a while to come around, starting out rather thin and light and disappointing. It passed through a number of stages throughout the meal....some stages more attractive than others.

A tangy finish.

On balance, I would have to say that I didn't care for this wine, although my wife and I have enjoyed other vintages over the years.

Purchased at $12.95 (Canadian).

Bruce... as always, your notes are excellent. I have to say Im not a huge fan of this producer.... I always find heat and a certain "rushed" approach with the wines.... their Pinot Noir is overextracted and OTT. I think that this producer needs to slow down and finds its style... and with a few more years on its vines they will come around.

Patagonia is a great region with strong promise/perspectives... but for now, the only wines that blow my away from this region are the ones made by very old vines, and they are all in the super-premium price segment.

Thanks for your always helpful comment Alejandro.

As I said in my note, my wife and I have enjoyed several vintages from the producer, but have been disappoited lately. I think I will give them a pass for the next little while.

I must confess that one of the attractions is the fact that it comes from Patagonia and the associated interest in drinking wines from some of the most southern vineyards in the world.

I agree and really feel the same way.... hence Im even more pissed off at the fact that this producer cant get around to taking full advantage of the fact they have a super catchy name, come from an interesting part of the world.. now only if they could slow down and find a style and stick to it..... alas, I think this will all come around in due time. These folks are on my watch list for now... but not pulling the trigger just yet.
