TN: Two gravels plus a bonus feature

by Steve Kirsch » Sun May 18, 2008 8:41 pm

2004 Marechal Cuvee Gravel--probably the most aromatic of the several dozen we've had since release. For the past four months, this wine has becoming more tart each month. Since we've been following it for two years, it seems clear that the wine is falling apart in it's own way. No matter...this was the last bottle in the neighborhood, I think. And they've all been enjoyable, but I'm glad we've drunk them up. Time to move on to the 2005s.

2005 ESJ Rocks and Gravel. Decanted this an hour or so before we headed out. I took a whiff out of the decanter before leaving and I was shocked--it smelled like old vine mourvedre, waaay deep and dangerous, and totally off the charts for commercial wine, which it obviously isn't. Another half hour later the wine was drinking like an old friend, showing that California sunshine Steve E's wines are famous for. I don't regret laying in nearly a case based on reputation and vintage. I want my friends to drink this wine with me outside on summer evenings.

And some moving Scottish poetry here.

What does 'totally off the charts for commercial wine' mean? Is that a good or a bad thing?

I could have used an editor there. I meant to say that the bouquet smelled like something that could only come from a "natural" winemaker...no self-respecting wine corporation would release such a thing!

I was a little concerned what my wife would think of it. I should have known her better--she enjoyed it as much as I did.

Rahsaan, can you offer some advice? I'd like to get some 2005 ESJ syrah before it's completely gone. In your view, is the Bassetti just completely unique and worth the extra price compared to the Wylie-Fenaughty? I have experience with the latter, but not the former.

Aha, that makes sense about the commercial wine comparison.

As far as the 05 Bassetti vs. W-F, it's hard to say without knowing your palate/purchasing needs. Personally, I think they are both worthwhile, and I would buy more of both. $45 for the Bassetti seems fair to me in today's market, it is a mighty fine wine, will only get better, and, it was unfortunately Steve's last vintage with Bassetti fruit. That said, there are people out there who prefer W-F to Bassetti, and you certainly wouldn't go wrong with lots of W-F. So, depending on your purchasing needs, one could make an argument for more W-F vs. Bassetti.

Sorry if that doesn't help :D

But, depending how much Bassetti is left, it certainly doesn't hurt to try a bottle before deciding whether you need a case. You'll certainly be happy with that bottle. So, it's a win-win!! :D
