WTN: Mostly Italian wines from Nico's party

by Jay Labrador » Mon May 19, 2008 6:17 am

Notes from the baptismal party for Nico and Jimi's first baby. All Italian wines with a mostly Italian menu.

Giuseppe Cortese Rabaja Barbaresco 2001 - Good nose. Cherries and raspberries. Very long with a refreshing acidity which made it go quite well with the food.

Buondonno Chianti Classico 2004 - Cherries. Lacks a bit of fruit. Shrill acidity and soft tannins. Unbalanced. Didn't like this.

Gianluca Viberti Nebbiolo Langhe 2003 - Nice label with a photo of, I presume, Signor Viberti in a tub, bottle in hand, and covered in grapes. Strawberries and smoke. Quite fruity. Long finish. I enjoyed this.

Chateau Malescasse 2005 - New worldy nose. Very dark. There seems to be some baked, overripe quality to the fruit which I found off-putting. Some coffee. This was popped and poured. I suspect maybe an hour's decanting would have improved this for me.

Greppone Mazzi Brunello di Montalcino 1999 - Scent of roasting meat. Chocolate. Quite sweet, full. Very impressive and easy to drink.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
