WTN: Havens Bourriquot

by Dale Williams » Tue May 20, 2008 12:46 pm

Betsy's back, Betsy's back! And back in kitchen. She felt like red meat, and had little time, so turned to an old favorite- steak on a watercress/parsley salad with a horseradish/mustard dressing. A rather assertive dish that needs a fairly bold red. I chose the 1999 Havens Bourriquot (Napa), a Cab Franc/Merlot blend. Some vanilla, a hint of horse (brett?), flowers and red fruit on nose. On palate it shows darker fruit, ripe but balanced. with a bit of spice and black olive. Nice texture. Easy to drink, a bit of tannin remaining, holds well through evening. The light brett note blows off (was never enough to bother me), there is some mushroom/forest floor accenting the black plum fruit. Once again I like this wine. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Thanks, Dale!

If you ever run across their "Hudson Vineyard" Syrah, give it a try. Definitely a balanced, elegant wine.

I still have a couple of 1995's in the cellar. The last time I had one (Nov. 2006) it wasn't very impressive and I took some pretty good heat from others on the boards who said that it was much better than what I thought.
Not that that ever stopped me . . .

Dale,

Thanks for the TN. I have a couple of bottles buried offsite. Looks like I may have to drink these sooner rather than later.

Jim, I would never presume to tell you (or anyone) they were wrong. I've liked the '96, '99, & '01 Bourriquot, have friends who have, others who disliked. Don't think I've tried the '95. But if I tried it and liked it, I wouldn't think you were wrong (nor that I was).

Ramon, this seems as mature as I'd need, but ymmv.
