The Len Evans Tutorial

by Mike Pollard » Thu May 22, 2008 1:48 pm

The late, great Len Evans was a major player in revamping wine judging in Australia. In the latter part of his life he began the Len Evans Tutorial as a way to expose, each year, a selected few to the great wines of the world and to hopefully create the next generations of wine show judges. This really is no picnic for those selected. Each day starts with the blind tastings, and judging, of 30 varietal wines. In the afternoon there are masterclasses focusing on recent vintages of the greatest wines of France, Italy, Spain or Germany. Dinner is a more relaxed affair comprising five or more brackets of wines, some 40 or more years old. On the final morning the six red Burgundies of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti are presented blind, and each scholar has to identify the vintage, and the six Appellation Controlees from which they respectively come.

The complete wine list for the 2007 tutorial was an amazing collection of wines.

Did you go? That list of wines is just insane.

p.s. I was particularly pleased to see the 2002 Te Awa Boundary, a New Zealand Bordeaux style blend, in such resplendant company on one of those lists. I took the '00 to one of Bill Spohn's lunches recently, and it showed beautifully.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Did I go? Nope. Its limited to 12 individuals and there is a selection process but that does cover the cost of wine, food and accommodation valued at around $9000. The only cost is getting to the Hunter Valley.

If something like this was offered as a wine course I'm sure there would be many who would pay the $9K.
