WTN: Bründlmayer Zweigelt + Burgaud Morgon CdP "James"

by Saina » Sat May 24, 2008 5:07 pm

Both are wines that I have posted on before, so forgive me, but I liked them so I want to sing their praises. Especially since the Morgon seems to be turning around:

Image

  • 2004 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Zweigelt - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal, Langenlois (5/24/2008)
Pleasantly vegetal and with an interesting note of rhubarb; dark toned fruit. Ripe and juicy, well structured and surprisingly long for a bargain wine. Delicious with a boeuf bourguignon-type slow cooked meat dish.
  • 2006 Domaine Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Côte du Py James - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (5/24/2008)
The food obviously was just what was needed with a young, serious Beaujolais. A rather stern and masculine style of Beaujolais: a nose of raspberry and gravel with the occasional hint of oak; very tannic, a little bit tart acidity but with a refreshing, mineral and red berry aftertaste. This was constantly changing, sometimes showing a bit of oak, sometimes showing the stern style of Morgon. I liked this much more than on my previous taste when I found the oak notes too obvious. Very primary, needs lots of time.

So is the Burgaud actually raised in oak, or is it something about the wine that mimics oak?

According to the importer, it spends 12 months in three year old oak - hence my surprise in my previous note on how much the oak smelled in the wine.

Other info I received from the importer: only 1100 bottles of the James was made in 2006 and it is sourced from a south facing part in the center of CdP, from 50yo vines. I guess the small amount made is the reason I have never seen any talk of this particula cuvée from Burgaud.
