Golf-related wines?

by Robin Garr » Sun May 25, 2008 10:37 am

Okay, this is kind of silly, but with the big Ryder Cup coming to our town this year, golf is on everyone's mind, and I'm going to need to wrote a local column about wines made by golfers or otherwise related in some way, however peripheral, to golf.

I come up with Greg Norman and then run out of steam.

Any of you golfers (or trivia experts) got more suggestions?

I haven't had the David Frost wine, but the Ernie Els wine (at least the Bordeaux blend) is a goopy mess. It wasn't always that way.

There's a list here with some names I did not know were involved:

My first thought was to dust off the old "wines with golf related names", but other than "FourPlay" wine, I came up short. Then I googled "golf and wine" and came up with this link.

http://lisa-albers.com/WEARWINE.pdf

Interesting premise, the author, Adu Jahmal, suggests that wine acumen is the "new" low golf handicap, in the business world. You might want to write a piece about how one would combine the two, i.e. which wine does one discuss while teeing up?

There is a NIck Faldo Selection of wines made by Katnook in Coonawarra, but I haven't tasted them. On Google, I did find this:

Golfers drink beer when anywhere near a golf course.

More true than you will ever know if you've not spent decades in the South.

I played golf several times per week for years in that venue. I don't drink beer. But, I was the only one in attendance not doing so.

But, of course, this was just with the good old boys, not in an elite venue like the one mentioned above.

There's plenty of beer drinking going on up here as well, but it's not exclusive.

Of course it's much easier to get a decent beer (e.g. Sam Adams - about the best that can be expected) than a decent glass of wine at most courses.

A couple of things come to mind, that I haven't seen posted here. One is that a high profile winery in New Zealand is House of Nobilo. A former pro golfer (from NZ) and current broadcaster on The Golf Channel is Frank Nobilo, who is related to thw wine people and serves as an ambassador for the winery. Another thought is that I twice played golf at a Greg Norman-designed course at Wente Vineyards in Livermore, CA. From several places on the course, you look down to lush fairways, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. I often thought I had died and gone to heaven, surrounded two of my favorite pasttimes.

Robin
There's a golfer who does wine writing (in blog form) as a hobby - called the 'Wining Pro' - based in Australia... whose name escapes me. It might be an alternative slant on the usual Els, Norman, Faldo etc. connections. Should be easy enough to internet search.

Untrue here. When I play, I usually have beer or ice tea afterwards. (I finish a lot of rounds at 11 AM so alcohol isn't always in the equation. Please don't tell my Irish relatives.) But weeknights I practice. 30 minutes or so on the driving range followed by 20 minutes at the chipping green. Then, I take my putter, get a glass of wine in the clubhouse, and adjourn to the putting green for more practice. If its early and a nice evening, I may get a second glass and keep practicing.
Cheers!

Mike, I am referencing hundreds of thousands of folks. You know them. I know them. Not individuals who have preferences for this or that.

Screaming Eagle..... hehe
There is a bird winery
There is a woods winery
......

These can't be so bad considering that I recall someone posting that we should drink Red Bicyclette to toast Lance Armstrong's wine!!!
