Rose Creek South Australia 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
This was a present. I knew nothing about the producer, but the look of the label didn't promise much. In the event I was pleasantly surprised. Although fairly one dimensional the wine was well balanced and had some juicy blackcurrant and cherry fruit to offer with a little edge of liquorice to give it some backbone.
Simonnet-Febvre 2006 Chablis
Another present, oddly enough. This has the typical Chablis smell and flavour of apples and wet stone which is improbably delicious. It also has the typical Chablis steely acidity - enough to be bracing while remaining refreshing. This particular example is distinct in possessing a creamy texture, a little hit of cinnamon and a dimension of honeyed sweetness which offsets that austere stone quality very nicely. Very good indeed and a timely reminder before the summer of just why Chablis remains my favourite source of white wine.
