Advice on old Beaulieu Georges de la Tour

by Brian K Miller » Thu May 29, 2008 12:16 am

At local BevMo store today: No label, no shelf talker, bottles looked in good condition 1991 Georges de la Tour $83 with my "BevMo Card"

Not cheap, but given that the winery is selling the 1995 for $130.....?

Splurge or not? A recent appearance on the shelf from off-site cold storage, and BevMo stores are well below 70 degrees...

I think the winery released some cellar stock a while back. This should be quite good in a more restrained (yay!) style. Not cheap, but given that it's 17 years old...

I don't recall having the 91 but have had the 85 and 87 many times and the age should not concern you. The 87 when I last opened one a year or two ago was not showing any decline. Its been a little longer since I last had an 85 but it seemed to be even more youthful than the 87.

I have not had many 1991 Cal Cabs in general but have had the Etude numerous times. If the Etude is indicative of the vintage, the 91 should be wonderful and have lots of years ahead of it.

If it were me, I would grab it.

By coincidence had the 74 and 75 G de L last night. Both in excellent shape.
FWIW the 74 has never really been a favourite of mine - I've always thought that the BV was one of the weaker 'top' 74's. But this time around it was very good - the best it's shown. Maybe you just have to keep them for 30 years before they begin to show well!

Thanks, Guys!

The sad thing is K&L in San Francisco had this as a wine club shipment for $30! :( (Not that I am a member of their club...)
