WTN: Vinexpo Day 2 Italian wines

by Jay Labrador » Sat May 31, 2008 6:44 am

Another tasting seminar from Vinexpo Day 2, this time featuring Italian wines.

Canneto Rosso di Montepulciano 2006 - Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Merlot. Very dry and tannic. Didn't like it although i can imagine it could go well with a grilled steak.

Pianirossi Solus 2006 - Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Alicante. Good fruit. Very tannic. Long. Bright acidity. Not my type, though.

Bel Sit Barbera d'Asti Superiore Sichivej 2003 - Sichivej means "old vines" in Piedmontese. Very nice nose. Good, sweet fruit. Good balance. Smoke, leather. Long finish. Very good.

Trabucchi Valpolicella Superiore Terre di San Colombano 2003 - Beautiful sweet, berry syrup nose. Complex. Mint, cassis. Very dry, tannic. Good fruit. Classy. Has lots of stuffing. Needs time but excellent.

Feudo Montoni Vrucara 2005 - Nero d'Avola. Tea leaf aromas. Quite soft, forward. Seems a bit hollow. Didn't like this.

We ended with a tasting of a olive oil:

Olio Pianogrillo Particella 34 - Tonda Iblea olives. Very interesting nose of unripe guavas. Tomatoey. A heavyweight but elegant oil. Very good.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
