WTN: Vinexpo day 2 Union des Grand Crus

by Jay Labrador » Sat May 31, 2008 12:12 pm

As in the St. Emilion tasting, difficult to get more than short impressions down due to the crush of people. Particularly for Graves and Pessac-Leognan, there were also white wines being presented but I decided to concentrate on the red wines. All wines from the 2005 vintage. As the notes show, Pomerol seems to have been particularly successful in this vintage.

Domaine de Chevalier 2005 - Chocolate. Very dry. Very good.

Fieuzal 2005 - Very dry. Good concentration. Tannic. Very good.

Clerc Milon 2005 - Tannic. Very dry. Very good.

Smith Haut Lafitte 2005 - Good nose. Chocolate, tobacco. Good fruit. Complex. Excellent.

Angelus 2005 - Tight, tannic. Hard to assess

Talbot 2005 - Slightly green but good.

Leoville Poyferre 2005 - Good nose. Swet chocolate. Sweet fruit. Excellent.

Leoville Barton 2005 - Leafy, tobacco nose. Very good.

Siran 2005 - Lots of fruit. Very forward, open. Excellent.

Pontet Canet 2005 - Very nice nose. Excellent.

Pichon Lalande 2005 - Very dry, tight, tannic. Good concentration. Very good.

d'Armailhac 2005 - Leafy. Good fruit. Very good.

Lynch Moussas 2005 - Tight. Good.

Pichon Baron 2005 - Some heat. Good fruit. Excellent.

Lagrange 2005 - Very good.

Beychevelle 2005 - Softer and more forward than most. Very good.

Prieure Lichine 2005 - Good tobacco nose. Slightly hot. Sweet and modern. Spicy, lots of fruit. Tends towards international in style. Excellent for me but not for everyone.

Lascombes 2005 - Creamy nose. Very good.

Citran 2005 - Very good but slightly bitter in the finish.

Camensac 2005 - Quite forward. Very good.

Petit Village 2005 - Nice, sweet nose. Chocolate, coffee. Full, rich, tannic. Excellent.

Gazin 2005 - Tea leaf notes. Chocolate. Rich, tannic. Excellent.

La Cabanne 2005 - Good nose. Rich, full, tannic. Excellent.

Clinet 2005 - Good nose. Coffee. Quite soft. Forward. Excellent.

de Fargues 2005 - After the Sauternes tasting on day 1, I decided to skip all the Sauternes except for this. In a word, excellent.

Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Good to hear about the Lalande. I have seen mixed opinions about that, but it is a house I have usually loved. Thanks for the many recent notes!

Ugh! I can't imagine the torture I would have to impose on myself to taste over 25 wines without food (even if I were to spit). Kudos to Jay for taking the bullet for all of us.

25 is very short work. Try 250 some time.

I'm not sure if you made it to the tasting but the 25 were probably less than half of the Chateaux pouring. Happy to do it, in any case.

Otto,

I've got a few more I'll be posting when I have the time. While all these notes are mostly for my records, thanks very much for taking the time to browse through them and I hope you found some of them useful.
