[WTN] Ferngrove 2003 Riesling (Frankland River, WA)

by MattThr » Sat May 31, 2008 5:02 pm

Bought - at an astonishingly cheap price - in the January clearance sale of my local wine specialist.

======

Has a curious aroma of flowers and slightly stale apples.

There's floral and apple notes on the palate too, but the primary flavour is one long, hot streak of tart-and-sweet lemon which, combined with a slightly effervescent quality, reminds me of nothing so much as lemon sherbet sweets. Sadly the tart dominates, somewhat spoiling what would otherwise be a simple, pleasant and very refreshing wine.

3/5

=====

I think I'll go back to the German Riesling in future :).

Ta for the note on this - to my palate the 2002 was excellent, but was perhaps the better vintage. In terms of descriptors your note highlights aspects I enjoy in Aussie riesling, but I'm guessing the balance of these was the issue. If so, and you have any more left it sounds like a good bet for ageing for a few (maybe 3-5) years to see if some honeyed notes can help soften the impact of the acidity.

Thanks for the input. After your note I tried giving the second half of the bottle some extra chilling time (the first time it had less than an hour in the fridge) but it didn't help - it just reduced the fruit flavour and emphasised the acid!

Sadly that's the only bottle, so I can't put any aside to see if it ages gracefully.
