Quite a few bottles were at the ready, but then, it was so hot on the roof terrace, no one felt like drinking much alcohol. Guglielmo, Patrick’s brother, was responsible for the barbecue and some nice antipasti, and Angela, and their mother, prepared some of her usual, spectacularly rich and flavourful courses – I particularly loved her desserts. Awesome!
Robert Weil Riesling Tradition 2007
Thanks to Remo. Same as at the arrivage tasting. Cherry blossom top note, fairly racy apple. Off-dry, a bit tannic. Medium-plus concentration. Nice little viscosity. Rating: ~86
Selbach-Oster Riesling Auslese*** #017 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr 1995
Full yellow-gold, soft green reflections. Thick buttery-oily yellow flowers, dandelion with a touch of sunflower, soft herbs, thick lemon. Nicely fat. Appley-citrus zesty acidity and bitter note. Fairly complex, just softly minerally, not too subtle, and yet, not irreminiscent of a Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Very long on the finish. Well-balanced wine. Rating: 91+?
Podere Il Caio Orvieto Classico Superiore 2005
Medium green colour. Mild spiced apple, lemon grass, vanilla oak, herbs, a bit tannic, a bit oily-glyceric, fairly good body. Alcohol integration is just sufficient. Medium length. Nice Orvieto. Rating: 86(+?)
Castello di Corbara Merlot De Coronis 2003
Thanks to Patrick. Opaque purple-black. Jammy pruney plum, very oaky, lots of charcoal, high alcohol at 14% (subjectively higher than that), almost Amarone-like, slightly hot chocolate truffle. Overripe and yet, a cat pee note to the acids. Acidity tastes a bit artificial. Mainly oak-induced tannin. No finesse, or close to none. Faint green tobacco. Rating: 87
