WTN: Montalto Nero D'Avola-Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Jun 07, 2008 11:32 am

Barone Montalto
Sicily.

Good cherry red color.

Creamy, chocolate, fairly big and soft, juicy cherry, raspberry, coffee, blood pudding, earthy, a pleasing bitter bite which I (rightly or wrongly) often associate with Italian reds.

A long smoky, chocolate finish.

Screwcap closure.

An impressive little wine for a good price.

Purchased at $9.70 (Canadian).

Now, there is an offbeat blend! Sounds like the two disparate varieties worked together well, though.

Montalto has a very nice bed and breakfast/agriturismo place, not far from Marsala on Sicily. I recommend it warmly. We had the pleasure to spend a night there three years ago. The day after we went to de Bortoli in Samperi to taste their exceptional Marasalas. Also heartily recommended!
Cheers,
Anders
