I haven't been paying attention to the vintage talk re Bordeaux wines, so I was amused by this email offer from JJ Buckley trying to convince me what a Bargain the coming release of Marguax is at $410, some of which is certainly valid with respect to non-U.S. buyers:
2007 Chateau Margaux RP92-94 - $409.99
The 2007 Chateau Margaux was just released to the trade and the price is down about 28% from 2006. After taking into account the weak dollar, the opening price is down about 13% in US dollars. Relative to current pricing, the 2007 is about 25% less than 2006. All things considered, we believe the price to be fair.
Approximate current retail prices for Chateau Margaux:
2005: $1400.00 (RP98)
2006: $550.00 (RP93-95)
2007: $410.00 (RP92-94)
Several factors are contributing to the escalating demand First Growths today, including:
Growing world wide demand. The market is rapidly expanding to include countries with a growing base of wealthy consumers who want to own a First Growth.
Less supply. The First Growth Chateaux are making less wine today, as yields are slightly down and lesser quality grapes are not making the cut into the Grand Vin.
