Riesling vine in Stockholm in bloom

by Anders Källberg » Mon Jun 09, 2008 5:02 pm

Today I was happy to find that the first flowers of one of my Riesling vines here in Stockholm (I have three) had opened. A big day! We have had quite a heatwave for some time now and the vine is planted against a southern facing brick wall that easily warms up. That is why it is flowering already at this northern location. It is in fact earlier than the average date for the Rheingau! Budburst was on the 25 April. Cooler weather seems to be on its way now, but I hope for a fine summer and, eventually, a harvest of nicely mature grapes, after a Goldene Oktober, perchance.

Anders,

Congrats! nothing like raw Riesling fruit on a cheese plate. Bud break here in Oregon was three weeks behind this year also. Lots of cool damp weather here, (unseasonably cold here for the last few months).

Thanks for the tip on the use for my grapes, if I get any... Too bad with your dreary weather. With the late bud break, are the vines in bloom yet?

Nice clear photo Anders.
Did you detect a scent from the flowers?

Hm, no I did not, but I did not think about it either. I was pretty close to them when I took the photo, but I might need to put my sniffer very close to them to feel it. What could I expect? I'll check it tomorrow.

Anders,

Bloom is happening as we speak. Seems long and drawn out though with the cool weather. On the upside there is no hot humidity to cause any problems. Here in Oregon we now recognize this month as Junuary! :?
