Proof-read your wine list, sir?

by Graeme Gee » Mon Jun 09, 2008 11:26 pm

How many mistakes can you make on a wine list with a single wine? Well, here’s a nomination. At a nearby German/Austrian–themed restaurant, there was a small card on the table listing national wines. Carefully avoiding mention of vintage or region (a minefield of possible mistakes, lets face it) it offered just the name – and the price, of course. Can’t go too far wrong with that, right? So here it was:
Solomon Undorf Güner Veltiner
Fascinated that all four words could be wrongly spelt, I turned to the main list in the soft-covered folder. Although the listing was different, you wouldn’t say things had improved much…
Solommon Undorf Grüner Veltiner *
I guess they got “Grüner” right, which is an improvement over the short listing. Still plenty of mistakes, though. But the ‘*’ offered potential, surely? An explanation, perhaps? ‘Sorry – this wine list was typed on a German keyboard at great speed very late in the night after sampling one glass of each wine listed’ – some thing like that?
No – instead it offered some helpful information for those confused by the varietal constituents of the wine. Very consumer-friendly. This is what it said:
* Grüner Veltiner – blend of Verdelho and Sauv blanc.

In the end I had a Austrian wheat-beer, and very nice it was too. But I tell you, I found more humour in that wine list than most cabarets I’ve seen…
cheers,
Graeme

:D

I've seen some horrible typos on wine lists, but nothing so consistent or funny.

On Sunday we popped into a cafe for Brunch. It was licensed although too early to drink, so I asked to see the wine list just out of curiosity, as I am always curious about prices and markups.
"What's a Raisling," I asked the wait guy.
"You mean a Riesling," he replied.
"No, I mean a Raisling," I reaffirmed and showed him the typo on the list.
"Oh," he said, with a smidgen of embarrassment.

In a winery cafe up north, where they sell other wines as well as their own, there were as many typos on a list than I'd seen anywhere before.

There's a wine called "Wrong Drongo", a 100% Mouvedred (sic) from Jumilla
You could also say 'wrongo drongo' about some of the spelling on the wine list.

gawurstraminer for gewurztraminer
nobile for noble
excaliber for excalibur
Pap Luna for Papa Luna

I pointed these out to the proprietor, but no idea if the errors were fixed.

Not just wine lists. The signs 'Pinor Gris' and 'Reisling' are boldy displayed on the tops of wine shelves in a supermarket after a refurbishment. When a shopper pointed out the misspellings to the lady at the checkout, she looked at him as if he was stupid and told him that they were probably just new varieties."

I would order that wine just for the experience of confronting the sommelier for bringing me the wrong bottle.

How about La Messagere beer described on the drink list as "glutton-free"?

Well, hats off to her for at least getting "varieties" right.

Here in the States we also deal daily with a pervasive anti-intellectualism, where the dominant culture sneers at anyone who points out a grammatical or spelling error--you know, "whatever".
