WTN: 2007 Germany Preview - 3 Leitz Wines

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:53 am

Last night I had the opportunity to taste three early import 2007s with one of the great guys of German winemaking: Johannes Leitz.

Quickly, as I don't have much time:

The 2007 Dragonstone Riesling QbA is back to the bright, impeccably balanced "stop me before I drink three bottles" wine we loved in 2002. It's packed with flowers and stone fruit and finishes way longer than it has any right to.

The 2007 Rudesheimer Klosterlay Riesling Kabinett is a certain case buy for me. You could power a small city with this wine, but it will never strip your enamel. I don't know how he does it, but Johannes can pack an electric fist into a velvet glove. Tons of peaches in this one, and again a supremely long finish, especially for a wine that's $16.99 (oh gosh...Johannes says he wants to kill "Mr. Euro")

Finally, the 2007 Rudesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Spatlese is another winner though it's more like a cross of the prior two for my palate. Rounder than the Klosterlay, but richer than the Dragonstone, it is mouthfilling and refreshing, though I prefer the added zip of the Klosterlay. This is still fantastic wine.

Anyway, more to come.

Sounds good, the 06 Dragonstone was not exactly 'bright' from what I remember.

Enjoy the day..

They all sound delicious. I may have to put some on hold at Bassin's if they aren't available in Raleigh.

David, I thought you said there is no place in your cellar for the 2007s?!
Enjoy!

There isn't, but the wife's tasting note says: "Yum!" so I have to buy the Klosterlay.

I had the kabinett last night and man was that broad shouldered. Especially for the vintage. Or is my palate just too accustomed to Saar and Ruwer wines?
