WTN: EdmundsStJohn Syrah Parmalee-Hill '05..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Jun 11, 2008 10:54 am

I got our EdStJ shipment last Thurs and I done been hearing these little/squeaky/pleading voices coming from the boxes all weekend.."Try me"..."No, try me". Suddenly last night, I heard this basso-profundo voice from one box.."Try me..or else". So I cracked open w/ my grilled cheese samwich:
1. EdmundsStJohn Syrah Parmalee-HillVnyd/SonomaCnty (14.4%; http://www.EdmundsStJohn.com) 2005: Black color; very intense blackberry/blueberry/Syrah rather peppery some smokey/pungent/roasted bit Rhonish some complex nose; tart Rhonish/roasted/smokey/pungent very strong blackberry/blueberry/Syrah very structured somewhat tannic flavor; very long blackberry/blueberry/Syrah some peppery/roasted/Rhonish structured finish w/ ample tannins; this is a classic EdStJ (who is characterized in some quarters as a maker of "low-brow Cotes du Rhone") Syrah in the mold of the Durells from the early '90's; will go on for 10-15 yrs; huge Syrah fruit w/o going over into the overripe/jammy character; more of the RaferJohnson mold than the AlOerter mold; terrific wine and a friggin' steal at $27.00
No BP today.

"Quarter(s)" in the one-fourth sense.

Wait till you try the Bassetti, Tom (if you haven't already).

Already had the Bassetti.....and think it's a killer Syrah and probably better than the P-H.
I was just struck by how much the P-H reminded me of his early Durells.

The Parmelee-Hill block the grapes come from is less than 75 yards from the site of the original planting of Syrah at Durell which was responsible for the character of those early '90s wines. The PH vines are uphill to the west on fairly steep terraces, much rockier soil. Reminds me of Cornas, in a way.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...
