WTN: 2001 von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett

by Matt Richman » Mon Jun 16, 2008 9:24 pm

Slightly effervescent, clean, bright. Steely acid with pineapple, green apple, honeysuckle. Very pure, clear with a razor edge acid. Extremely refreshing with a very long finish. Wish I had put away more of these, looking forward to more of my other '01 kabinetts.

Wow....still effervescent after all these years? Is that normal? I know that in young wines that I would look for this (and actually really enjoy this) but this is a seven year old bottle. Would appreciate the education.

Many thanks in advance.

I'm not extremely familiar with aging curves for von Kesselstatt, but seven years = young for certain German riesling. Especially in a structured vintage like 01.

I'm not shocked that there was still some trapped CO2.

It was a very youthful wine.

thanks for note. Thought I had this one, but apparently its the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen, not the Scharzhofberger

Matt, I had a bottle of the 99 Kabinett earlier this year and it was delicious and full of life and to top it off it was only $17.00! I am a big fan of Kesselstatt wines. I also had a 2001 Ockfener Bockstein Kabinett this year also that was still very fresh and tasty.
