Riesling-Tour: EMRICH-SCHÖNLEBER

by Martin Barz » Thu Jun 19, 2008 2:33 am

Last week I visited with danish friends the TOP german estates, Emrich-Schönleber, Wittmann, Keller and Breuer. Here is my first report.........

http://www.snakvin.com/foto/displayimag ... m=92&pos=0

The first station of our Riesling-trip was the estate Emrich-Schönleber in the region Nahe. Since 250 years there has been viniculture in the family, but it was only at the end of 1960s that the actual development into a winery of the present quality begun. The estate with 15 hectares vineyards (80% Riesling) in the parcels “Frühlingsplätzchen” und “Halenberg” is managed by Werner Schönleber and his son Frank. The soil of the feminine, filigree “Frühlingsplätzchen” consists mainly of red slate and pebbles, often interspresed with red loam of the Rotliegendes. The soil of the powerful, mineral “Halenberg” mainly consisting of blue slate and quartzite. By far the largest area consists of slopes facing south to south-west which recive an optimum of midday sun and have very special microclimatic conditions.
The main goal of the estate is “to bottle a wine which reflects the optimal of the vineyard, the grape variety and the climate. This means late, selective handpicking combined with the gentle pressing of the grapes, as well as cool fermentation. The vineyard is making the wine!”
The wines from the vintage 07 are outstanding and Emrich-Schönleber is together with Dönnhoff the nonplusultra in the region Nahe.

Riesling Brut
This sparkling wine is a steal for 12,50 Euro! 4.000 bottles and only sold to special customer. Creamy texture with a sublime fruit and combined with some nutty flavors.. Nice freshness. DELICIOUS

07 QbA
Very early harvested. On the yeast until end of february. Fresh, uncomplicated estate Riesling with flavours of blossoms and herbs.

07 “Lenz”
Picked later and almost the same vineyards like the Estate Riesling. 14g sugar and of course a demi-sec Riesling. Again flavors of blossoms, herbs and a lush fruit. Perfect match for spicy fusion-kitchen.
8 Euro

07 “Mineral”
The name says all! Big minerality, herbs and citrus fruits. Very clear, firm and precice structured. From parts of Halenberg + Frühlingsplätzchen. Impressive performance. 11 Euro

07 Frühlingsplätzchen trocken
Typical “Frühlingsplätzchen”, very sublime, filigree and feminine. Fine balance with a lovely fruit-acidity-play. Flavors of apple, mirabelle and spring meadow. 12 Euro

07 Halenberg trocken
Typical “Halenberg”, powerful and mineral-driven. A bit shy at the moment. Pure minerality! 16 Euro

07 Frühlingsplätzchen GG
A cask sampple. Bottled 2 weeks ago and open since 1 week. Yeasty, herbs, flint and lush yellow fruit and impressive depth already. Released in september. 26 Euro

07 Halenberg GG
A monolith. Bombastic minerality with flavors of pear, grapefruit and herb spiceness. Almost never-ending finish. The best Halenberg GG ever. Release in september. 28 Euro. BUY

06 Halenberg R
Very creamy with a dense fruit. Botritis. 18g sugar.
Needs 5 years more development. Release in september. 22 Euro. Fine.

07 Monzinger Kabinett
Lovely lush fruit. “Sunshine in the bottle”. A bit too flamboyant for my palate. 9,20 Euro

07 Frühlingsplätzchen Spätlese
WOW. Such light at its feet like a primaballerina. Sublime and perfectly integrated sweetness. 17g sugar. 14 Euro. BUY

07 Halenberg Spätlese
Overdone. Too much sweetness at the moment. Release in september. 15 Euro

07 Halenberg Auslese
A masterpiece! Very fine und concentrated. Imressive elegance. Candied fruits. Released in september. 22 Euro BUY

07 Frühlingplätzchen Auslese**
Overdone. Too much sweetness at the moment.

05 Frühlingsplätzchen BA
Very concentrated. Good work. 8,5%. Apricot and forest honey. 69 Euro

Thanks, Martin. If the Halenberg GG 07 is better than the 04, then it must be an absolute killer wine. I look forward to try it.

Peter,

both, Frank Schönleber and Philipp Wittmann compare the vintage 07 with the vintage 2001. This says all.........

Cheers,
Martin

Is there a 'regular' (i.e. no stars) Frühlingplätzchen Auslese?

My notes from last week's VDP say it was very nice and minerally.

Although it was late in the day when I got to it.

Ok, thanks. I guess you didn't taste it.

Was wondering, because it didn't seem overdone to me. But I guess the ** was a bigger monster.

You must understand that Martin is a German. So, naturally he struggles with the concept of residual sugar in a wine. But he is getting there... ;)

Yes, it seems I am getting older and maybe wiser. I ordered yesterday some bottles of 07 Schloss Lieser "Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr" Spätlese and some bottles from 07 Fritz Haag "Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr" Spätlese will also find the way to my cellar.
Surprisingly at a BestBottle-Party on Friday I enjoyed the Fritz Haag Spätlese much, much more than the Spätlese trocken.

I assure you, it is nothing to be ashamed of...
