WTN: 2006 Brunnthal, Grüner Veltliner, Leth

by Anders Källberg » Fri Jun 20, 2008 4:32 pm

From Wagram in Austria. A "Lagenreserve". Quite deep colour, almost golden. Warm deep nose, though not very powerful, rather a bit restrained. Thick and oily, with notes of mature fruit, white flowers and white pepper. Powerful taste, thick and oily, chewable. Peppery and intense with depth and power. Almost a bit heavy. Ending in a dusty, mineral style, oozing of white pepper. In fact, it made me sneeze after swallowing it a couple of times! Very good quality and archetypical Grüner, but maybe a tad too heavy for my taste. 13.5% abv.

Sounds pretty well nigh on ready, Anders. Deep colour, thick, oily, chewy, heavy. Can't say I'm amoured to this wine by your note, but as you were kind enough to respond my latest note, and very few people ever do, I thought I'd return the favour to you. Hope to see you in chat on Sunday night/Monday morning where we can debate the joys of Pinot sap .....
Cheers,

David

Thanks for the reply David. If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours...
Alas, I'll just have arrived to my hotel in Genoa tomorrow at chat time, so my presence there is rather uncertain. If I'll not be there, please send my regards to our friends there, and make sure to take good care of Julia, in particular (as if I did not know you will!).

I can't say that I've ever been too excited by their Grüner Veltliner, but I've tasted some very fine older Roter Veltliners from Leth. They seem to be a very solid producer.

In fact, I like their basic bottling better, since it is fresher and with less over-ripe fruit. The extreme white pepper in this one is pretty interesting, though. An utmost expression of Grüner Veltliner varietal character.

I have never had a Leth bottling, but the extreme levels of white pepper sound intriguing.
