WTNs 1999 Carillon Puligny Perrieres, 2002 Roumier Morey

by Jacques Levy » Wed Jun 25, 2008 9:54 am

At the Kittle House with the family to celebrate my son's graduating High School and my daughter graduating Middle School.

We had a 1999 Louis Carillon Puligny Montrachet Perrieres with appetizers and Jill's Halibut; amazing wine - complex with a nose of hazelnuts, smooth though a bit oily texture, a powerful and rich wine with intense minerals, this is focused and structured, just a perfect example of a fine Puligny Perrieres. Highly recommended.

With my steak filet, I wanted a red so I ordered a split of 2002 Roumier Morey St Denis Clos de la Bussiere. A knockout nose of red currants and violets, chewy texture very reminiscent of a Gevrey; this is nowhere near ready but is still sooooo good. A wine both rustic and elegant - only in Burgundy.

Thanks for the note, Jacques. Carillon is my favorite among the very fine upper-echelon of Puligny producers. Les Perrieres seems always to be the classiest of the 1er Crus for them, in ways of balancing fruit and mineral. Referts is also a favorite, but more Puligny meets Meursault (well, which it does.)

Cheers,
Bill

I lean towards the Puligny "Les Referts" and in my only one-on-one comparison prefered the Referts from Jean-Philippe Fichet over Carillon's but both are top producers. A friend had the 2000 vintage of the Roumier Clos de la Bussiere and found it quite muted. He was questioning whether it was in a dumb phase or over-the-hill. From your comment that the 2002 was nowhere near ready, the 2000 was probably in a awkward phase and opened too soon.

My favorite Puligny are Le Caillerets and Les Pucelles. After that the ones closer to Meursault like Referts and Perrieres. Oh and I like Combettes and Folatieres too. Wait, I take it back.... They're all my favorites. :D

I was forgetting the Les Pucelles. That's the first P-M 1er Cru I ever had and still a favorite but I don't buy it often because of the escalating price.
