Good food, nice wines...

by Michael A » Wed Jun 25, 2008 1:21 pm

A very nice dinner with my children (22 & 27) & S.O.'s last night…
2007 Sancerre Le Grand Fricambault Silex (just writing what’s on the label) with fresh boiled shrimp and cajun cocktail sauce.
Very fresh and clean with lots of crisp fruit and dry edge…nice
2004- Piesporter Goldtropfchen Spatlese – St Urbans-hof with Teriyaki basted bbq chicken, potato salad & roasted ears of corn.
Bright fruit with nice acid to balance the Teriyaki, very terrior driven wine, luscious, the clean finish and glaze melts in your mouth
2005 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese #9 Willi Schaefer with marion berries and vanilla bean ice cream
Everyone was put back in their chair on this one, intense spicy aromas of carmel apples and tropical fruit, crawling down the glass, flavors everywhere in the mouth, lemons limes melons oranges cloves oh my my my! and a finish that I still taste.

my kids love to come to dinner..

Very nice Michael. I'm a big fan of both St. Urbans-Hof and Willi Schaefer, though I don't have either of those specific wines in the cellar (nor do I have room for them).

Thanks David,

I had been reading a lot of post's lately and a few of you are drinking those young Auslese's. I had two bottles of the Schaefer and could not resist to give it a whirl.
I will leave the other alone for awhile now. Next up to be opened this weekend - 1999 Schloss Saarsteiner Auslese #12 & 2002 Maximin Grunhauser Auslese #93! I will report later.

Three for three! They all sound inviting! Especially like your description of the Graacher Himmelreich.

I haven't tasted enough of St. Urbans-Hof, but I have adored the blackcurrant-leaf profile of the Piesporter Goldtröpfchens I've had. We just tasted the Schaefer Auslese #14 which I thought restrained for the year. It sounds like your #9 was more typical of the fruit forward, buxom style of the year?

I managed to get an invite to a trade tasting of the '04 St Urbans Hof and enjoyed their entire lineup for the vintage.
