[WTN] Woodlands 2006 Cabernet Merlot (W Australia)

by MattThr » Thu Jun 26, 2008 5:32 pm

A fellow sharp eyed user - Ian Sutton - spotted this award-winning wine had arrived in my local wine store and recommended I got a bottle. Although widely considered an ageworthy wine, I thought it wise to try a bottle to see if it was worth picking up some more to store.

=====

Smells of rich blackcurrant with slight vegetable notes.

Initial flavour on the palate is vanilla and mild spice, bursting into ripe, opulent fruit - plum, blackcurrant and cherry - which then mingles delightfully into more subtle, slightly harsher flavours such as smoke and liquorice, the whole managing the rare feat of being both deliciously fruity and complex. The wine is smooth and well balanced and oak treatment is nicely subtle. Generally outstanding, the only fault I could find was a slightly short and mildly over-acid finish.

5/5

=====

Yes, more will have to be obtained, and room somehow found for it :) I'm disappointed to find this years "reserve" has sold out - something I must pick up from next years' vintage.

Margaret River, Western Australia.

Edited post title to make this clearer.

I like some wines from Western Australia, much more so than the eastern regions.

Great to hear - we tasted an earlier vintage of this, plus a few of the pricier labels at the winery (they'd sold out of this label). We've been impressed across the board and although prices in UK are higher than Oz (far from always the case in these days of GST+WET in total >40% tax), I still reckon there's value in their wines.
