Willamette Valley OR. Capitello Wines winemaker dinner

Winemaker Dinner Capitello Wines, Willamette Valley Oregon & Marlborough NZ!

Wonderful venue wonderful company.

Meet and greet with winemaker Ray Walsh-
2006-Marlborough NZ Sauvignon Blanc
Ray is from NZ and made wine for King Estate here in the Willamette Valley. He has gone out on his own and has been creating wonderful stylish wines.
The NZ Sauvignon Blanc was 100% made in NZ (by Ray) and delivered here.
Big, floral nose that smacked of Sancerre style, crisp and refreshing. Screw cap.

Spinach Salad with Chevre and pine nuts 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris, pretty in the glass, shy on the nose, lots of full fruit and citrus flavors, to me seemed more Alsatian style than Willamette Valley (I prefer the former). Clean finish.
Next up 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir with,
Walnut Crusted Pork Chop w/ Black cherry sauce, roasted Sweet Potatoes and Steamed veggies.
I asked Ray if his style was “Old World – New World” and he replied he thought mostly “New World “. This wine to me was very Burgundy (not Willamette Valley). Great intense color and rich nose of light barrel, deep pinot fruit. Would love to blind this against a nice Burgundy. Very nice wine.
Then he broke out a wine not on the menu…2006 “Succession Cuvee” 100% Willamette Valley Pinot Noir (no label). Very Intense and delicate at the same time, berries, light toasty oak, brilliant rich color and body. Come to Eugene, Oregon and I will take you to where Ray does his wines and you get one or two, 2 barrels made.
Dessert- Artisian Chocolate plate from (plug) KeKau Chocolatiers here in Eugene with 2006 Dolcino- Late Harvest Gewurztraminer, deep gold, I cannot get a nose of Gewurztraminer on the nose, more like some fruit liquer. Nice and tangy, alittle soft on the finish.

Anyone else had Capitello wines?

No, I haven't had any of these. I don't even remember ever seeing any on the shelves here.

Where was the dinner? It sounds like a great event, Michael.

I held a bottle of the PG in my hands today at a local wine shop. The look of it made me think it had been misfiled (this shop displays by country of origin)--in whatever way Oregon wines look Oregonian, this did not. I'm sorry now that I put it back! If they still have it next time I'm in, I'll pick up a bottle.

Cynthia / Jenise,

Sorry I haven't responded sooner, my DSL has been acting up lately.
The venue was Midtown Marketplace on Willamette St. It's a combination, bistro, bakery, coffee shop, wine shop & bar. Nice atmosphere, lots of light (except in the wine bar where you are surrounded by your dream cellar).
Jenise, I am not sure what you meant by "Oregon" label. His style of Pinot Gris is one of the nicer ones IMO here in Oregon. The NZ Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris are not going to break the bank, the Pinots are kinda spendy. When I said I would like to blind it with some nice Burgundies I was referring to wines around the same price,$25 - $30.

Thanks ladies

I just googled the label for the Pinot Gris. It strikes me as too "mass market" in style I would likely put it down thinking that the wine was not going to be to my taste. I'm not usually influenced by labels, but theirs is not good at all. The wines sound good though!

David,
I am taking a closer look right now and I see what you mean. Around here most geeks know Ray for his wines. The label does look 'commercial" with that purple and red (not colors I would have chose), and the font is weak and gets lost. I am a graphic designer here and have a few winery accounts. I would have to say my style is more traditional. IMO we seem to have many poorly designed wine labels here, everything from the family dog (Cherry Hill- very good Pinot Noir) to a label that says "Wine by Joe" always consistant quality winemaker (Joe Dobbs), but if a label to me that is poorly designed or has 15 fonts on it, I tend to steer away unless I know their reputation. If you wish to see some of my work I could direct you to my site.
