WTN: Altesino Rosso 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Jun 29, 2008 8:16 pm

IGT Toscana

A blend of Sangiovese (80 per cent) and Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon.

A rich nose, with leather and earth.

Cherry fruit, medium weight, peppery, lots of leather, earth, drying, good tangy acidity, with a not unpleasant bitter bite.

With time the bitter bite intensified, giving the wine a real edge. The wine needs to be matched with richly flavored foods.

A long tangy-bitter finish.

Purchased at $18.95 (Canadian).

I'm surprised that an IGT blend would have that level of bitterness. Usually the Merlot component is included to avoid such a result.
